The Summary of the book "Think Again" by our Gold Member Sameer Mathur
Embracing Change: The Importance of Rethinking.
THIS BOOK REVOLVES AROUND THE CONCEPT OF UNLEARN & RELEARN
The Need for Security and Adaptability
All human beings desire a sense of security. We prefer the path of least
resistance and tell ourselves that we know how the world works, rather
than struggle with the unknowns and uncertainty. However, to succeed in a complex and dynamic world, it is essential to be able to unlearn, rethink, and relearn.
Challenging Instincts and Common Beliefs -
This is particularly important because many of our first instincts and
widely-held “truths” are, in fact, incorrect. Over the years, Adam Grant has studied numerous thought leaders and carried out his own experiments to explore various methods for rethinking more eUectively.
Three Main Learnings from This Book-
1. Individual rethinking: how to open our own minds.
This involves recognising the need to challenge our personal
assumptions and beliefs, allowing ourselves to reconsider and adapt
our perspectives in the face of new information or changing
circumstances.
2. Interpersonal rethinking: how to encourage others to rethink.
This learning emphasises the importance of facilitating constructive
conversations and creating supportive environments where others
feel comfortable questioning their own views and exploring
alternative ideas.
3. Collective rethinking: how to build lifelong learning communities.
The focus here is on fostering cultures where continuous learning
and mutual re-evaluation are encouraged, enabling groups andorganisations to remain flexible, responsive, and innovative together
HOW TO CHANGE SELF & OTHERS -
Think like a scientist, not a preacher, prosecutor or politician
When you’re considering an opinion or viewpoint, resist the urge to
preach, prosecute or politick.
• Don’t think in preacher mode, i.e. stick to 1 “right” viewpoint and act
from faith/belief instead of hard facts or evidence.
• Don’t think in prosecutor mode, i.e. attack others’ arguments and
refuse to admit mistakes.
• Don’t think in politician mode, i.e. change your view or position to
suit the circumstances.
• Do embrace a scientist mindset, i.e. be actively open-minded,
intentionally challenge your assumptions, knowledge, instincts and
habits (instead of clinging to them)
